Autonomy is one of three important human motivators that the psychologist Daniel Pink outlines in his book Drive. Pink suggests that autonomy is something that we naturally desire and it significantly improves our lives. In the work place autonomy improves job satisfaction and this in turn leads to enhanced performance at work.

A study at Cornell University of 320 small businesses found companies that offered workers autonomy grew at four times the rate of control oriented firms and had one third of the turnover of staff. See also mastery and purpose.
